SEO Horror Stories

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to share some spine-chilling SEO horror stories from my career. Hopefully these tales will help you avoid similar pitfalls while giving you a few laughs along the way. We’ll also cover some tips on avoiding your own SEO nightmares and tricks for optimizing your seasonal landing pages.

Broken Redirects at Launch

There’s no horror quite like a website launch gone wrong, especially when broken redirects are involved. In my experience, this nightmare typically arises due to late-stage changes to content or URLs that aren’t effectively communicated.

For a high visibility project, this situation can be panic-inducing. Personally, I’d rather try my hand at exorcising a demon than fixing and testing thousands of redirects in production again – but such is life as an SEO.

Mismanaged Expectations

One of the quickest ways to find yourself in a nightmare when doing SEO professionally is to mismanage expectations. Stakeholders might expect the impossible—like ranking #1 on Google—especially after hearing a casual promise in a meeting like, “Oh sure, we’ll get you to number one by next month!” Even a simple statement in a meeting like “yeah we’ll have Google change that right away” could have you fighting for your life like you’re in a SAW movie.

I’ve been there, both in boutique and large agencies, where over-promises have led to zombie-like deadlines and near-impossible tasks. My advice? Avoid making guarantees like these yourself, and collaborate with your team to prevent others from making them. And whatever you do, never work with vendors that promise the impossible.

Manual Actions & Algorithm Penalties

One of the scariest moments of my career was seeing a manual action notice pop up in my work email. I was doing inhouse SEO for a Fortune 500 company at the time. Thankfully it was quickly remediated, but the initial shock was something I’ll never forget.

I’ve also seen businesses relying on black hat SEO practices face Google’s Panda and Penguin algorithm updates, which targeted doorway pages and unnatural backlink schemes. Watching your website or a client’s performance drop off a cliff can be terrifying, but it’s a crucial reminder of why playing by the rules is essential in SEO.

Tips to Avoid SEO Nightmares

While SEO challenges can often be inevitable, following best practices, search engine guidelines and expect advice can prevent most ordeals. Avoid black hat SEO practices such as these to help avoid running into your own SEO nightmares:

  1. Generated content – Using AI or other methods to automatically generate website content is generally a bad idea for SEO that will cause more harm than good in the long run.
  2. Keyword stuffing – Adding keywords unnecessarily and unnaturally to your content hasn’t worked for SEO in a long time and can actually hurt rankings.
  3. Doorway pages – Creating multiple pages solely to target specific keyword combinations is a surefire way to get penalized
  4. Buying links – Most paid links from link builders are low-quality and likely to get your website penalized by search engines like Google. Just don’t do it.
  5. Cloaking – Show Google the same content your showing users or things could get scary.

Seasonal Landing Page Optimization Tricks

Halloween is the perfect time to brush up on seasonal landing page optimizations for the Q4 holiday season. Here’s a few tips and tricks to keep in mind when optimizing your seasonal pages for organic search:

  • Use evergreen URLs – Using the same URL year over year helps build SEO signals and improve rankings in the long-term.
  • Fresh, seasonal content – Avoid doing a find & replace for the year and republishing; give people something new and fresh to read this year.
  • Time-sensitive offers – Many businesses run promotions during holidays like Halloween so make sure to call out any limited-time deals on your landing page.
  • Mobile-friendly – Hopefully your entire website is already mobile friendly, but it’s particularly important for seasonal landing pages because customers often view websites while in-store shopping.

Happy Halloween! 🎃

By staying away from black hat SEO tactics and following best practices, you can keep your website safe from the costly penalties that haunt so many. Focus on delivering quality content, building genuine connections, and optimizing your seasonal landing pages thoughtfully. With the right strategies, you’ll not only dodge SEO nightmares but also delight your audience and search engines alike. Happy optimizing!
